Prologue: The Myth of the Ten Rings

The story begins centuries ago, when a warrior named Xu Wenwu discovers the mystical Ten Rings—ancient artifacts of unimaginable power that grant immortality and god-like strength. With them, he conquers kingdoms, topples dynasties, and becomes the most feared warlord in history. But no amount of power can heal his grief after losing his beloved wife, Ying Li.

Years later, Wenwu’s path crosses with Li, a guardian of the hidden realm of Ta Lo. Their love is forbidden, yet they defy fate, marry, and have two children: Shang-Chi and Xialing. For a time, Wenwu abandons the Rings, choosing family over power. But when Li is murdered by his old enemies, grief consumes him. He returns to the Rings, training Shang-Chi as an assassin while neglecting Xialing, who grows resentful.

Act 1: The Assassin Who Ran Away

Present Day – San Francisco
Now going by "Shaun," Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) lives a normal life as a valet with his best friend, Katy (Awkwafina). But his past catches up when assassins attack him on a bus, demanding the pendant his mother gave him. In a jaw-dropping fight scene, Shang-Chi reveals his skills, defeating the attackers while a stunned Katy watches.

Realizing his father has found him, Shang-Chi confides in Katy: the pendant is a map to Ta Lo, his mother’s homeland. To protect his sister, he flies to Macau, where Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) runs an underground fight club. Before they can reconcile, Wenwu’s forces—led by Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu)—capture them.

Act 2: The Truth About the Rings

The Ten Rings Compound
Wenwu (Tony Leung) reveals his plan: he believes Li is alive, trapped behind the sealed gates of Ta Lo. The voices he hears are hers, calling him to free her. Shang-Chi knows it’s a trick—the Dweller-in-Darkness, a soul-eating demon, is manipulating him. But Wenwu, blinded by grief, won’t listen.

A flashback reveals Ta Lo’s magic: Ying Li harnessed the Great Protector, a dragon bound to the land. Wenwu’s Rings, however, come from a dead celestial, making them opposites. Their love was a balance of light and dark—a balance shattered by her death.

Act 3: Battle for Ta Lo

The Hidden Realm
Shang-Chi, Xialing, and Katy escape to Ta Lo, where they meet Ying Nan (Michelle Yeoh), Shang-Chi’s aunt. She trains them to fight the coming invasion. Ta Lo’s warriors prepare, but Wenwu’s army breaches the gates.

In the climax:

  • Katy (now an archer) and Xialing lead the defense.

  • Shang-Chi confronts Wenwu atop a bamboo scaffold, their duel mirroring their fractured bond.

  • The Dweller-in-Darkness emerges, revealing it manipulated Wenwu to escape its prison.

Wenwu, finally understanding his mistake, sacrifices himself to give Shang-Chi the Rings. Merging their powers, Shang-Chi destroys the Dweller with the Great Protector’s help.

Epilogue: The Legacy of the Ten Rings

With Wenwu gone, Shang-Chi and Xialing disband the Ten Rings, freeing its soldiers. Returning to San Francisco, Shang-Chi and Katy are summoned by Wong (Benedict Wong) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who analyze the Rings’ energy.

Post-credits scenes hint at:

  1. Xialing rebuilding the Ten Rings as her own.

  2. The Rings pulsing mysteriously, calling to something—or someone—cosmic.
